trouble water (blame)

blame it on the lack of rain
that’s the reason why
you can’t cry
so you say
you need tears from the sky
to hide the pain in your eyes
so you will not weep
while your soul is torn
to shreds

blame it on common decency
this cloak you wrap around
your feelings
render them invisible
exquisite mask of happiness
leaking tender smiles
is all that you show
blocking from arm’s length
keeping me
from under your skin
blame it on me
blame it on we
the declaration never meant to be
blame it on you
blame it on two
victims of necessity
blame it on the bed that burned
the fire that consumed
the sheets
the scorching heat
between the bodies that moved
no amount of cool water
would soothe
blame it on the height of passion
that sank to the depths
of despair
irrationality has taken over
not enough pieces
to collect
and repair
blame it on me
blame it on we
the declaration never meant to be
blame it on you
blame it on two
products of instability
can’t save this
there’s no basis
for believing in me and you
